The South Dakota Department of Education published the 5th edition of the state model in December 2023. The field of education continues to evolve as do the needs of the students served. The guidelines, resources, and suggestions contained in this model are intended to help South Dakota school counselors evaluate and make enhancements to their programs to best meet the unique needs in their schools. The South Dakota Comprehensive School Counseling Program Model is adapted from the ASCA National Model, 4th edition.

ASCA National Model, Fourth Edition

As part of the education team, school counselors foster development in career, academic, and social/emotional areas for ALL students by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program.

The ASCA National Model, provided by the American School Counselor Association, is a framework for a comprehensive school counseling program to help answer the question, “How are students different as a results of what school counselors do?”
